Kentucky deaths
About 10 years ago, Joy L. Curry suffered a stroke that left her with aphasia - she could recognize things, but had trouble remembering their correct names.
But she didn't have any trouble remembering the names for 52 things she had held in her hands many times before - a deck of cards.
The Latonia resident, who died Wednesday at 69, loved to play cards, especially euchre.
She met her husband, Ernest, one Halloween night at a euchre tournament, when she was dressed as a bumblebee.
His heart told him right away that he needed to marry her, he said. They were married 18 years, until her death.
Mrs. Curry, who grew up in Dayton, didn't finish high school but went to work cutting pies at the former Mill's Restaurant in downtown Cincinnati.
She would go on to manage several eateries, including a pizza restaurant in Latonia. She also waited tables for conventions at a local Holiday Inn.
After she married Ernest Curry, she became a partner in his Covington-based cash register sales and service business, Economy Cash Register.
They also continued to play euchre together in local tournaments.
In 1994, while driving on Horse Branch Road, she had a stroke and wrecked the car. A broken arm was repaired with 16 screws and three brass plates.
She recovered well, but then suffered another stroke, which caused the aphasia. But she had almost completely recovered from that recently.
Last February, she started playing in Texas hold 'em poker tournaments, and had been ranked as high as third in the Northern Kentucky region.
She had hoped to win a seat at a tournament in Las Vegas, but it was not to be.
On Friday, she suffered a heart attack on her front lawn. By the time she was found, her brain had suffered massive damage.
Previously, she and her husband had both decided they didn't want to be kept alive if they had no chance of recovery, so they both signed living wills.
When the doctors told her husband that even if she did recover, she would have no quality of life, he signed a "do not resuscitate" order.
It shows how important it is to make one's wishes known beforehand, he said.
