Jackpots: Big payoffs at Oaks Card Club in Emeryville

There's plenty of money to be won on jackpots at local cardrooms, but no place has been paying out like the Oaks Card Club in Emeryville, where big prizes and new tournaments have players excited.

The cardroom offers jackpots in five table games: Texas Hold 'Em, seven-card stud, Omaha Hi-Lo Split, double-hand poker and pai gow poker. Since Nov. 1, management has awarded more than $300,000 in jackpot winnings. Jackpots in double-hand poker and pai gow poker reward players for obtaining high hands. The other jackpots - those in Texas Hold 'Em, seven-card stud and Omaha Hi-Lo Split - are what cardroom regulars call "house-funded," meaning the house adds money to each account every day.

Tournament Manager Allen Wasserman says the jackpot for Hold 'Em is capped at $100,000 and notes that if the account ever exceeds that amount, the funding is rolled over to a backup account.

"We do what we can to make sure our jackpots are worth winning," he says.

And jackpots are being won. On Nov. 25, an unsuspecting player won an $88,000 bad-beat jackpot playing Texas Hold 'Em. On Dec. 17, another player won a completely different bad-beat jackpot at the same game - this time for $96,000. In both cases, jackpot winners needed at least four of a kind to qualify.

As is the case with most bad-beats, Oaks Card Club jackpot winners split each jackpot three ways. The bad-beat loser - in this case the big winner - takes home 50 percent of the jackpot, and 25 percent goes to the player who won the hand. The remaining 25 percent is distributed evenly among all other players at the table.

On the tournament side, the Oaks Card Club is starting a 16-week series of Sunday no-limit Hold 'Em tournaments. Each week, players will compete for the prize money generated from tournament entry fees ($100, plus $25 buy-in). Wasserman says players also will earn points each week when they finish in the top 10 percent.

At the end of the 16-week series, the 100 players to earn the most points will qualify for a free-roll tournament in May. During this tournament, the cardroom will award $25,000 in World Series of Poker entry fees to the top seven finishers. Those seats include a $10,000 seat, a $5,000 seat, a $3,000 seat, two $2,000 seats and two $1,500 seats.

Wasserman says the seven winning players also will receive free airfare and hotel accommodations for the event, which will be held at the Rio All-Suite Las Vegas Hotel & Casino from May 30 to July 17. Psychologist Jerry Yang, last year's World Series Main Event winner, bagged $8.25 million as his prize. Now that's a jackpot worth celebrating.
