Ada and Hermando Folla
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A young man was just home in Rosebank from the Marines when a certain young lady, who had just moved across the street, spotted him polishing his Pontiac. She -- Ada (Terry) Mazzaro -- thought he -- Hermando (Spanky) Folla was cute. So with the support of her cousin Marie, she made up an excuse to meet him. Soon after, they were dating.
Having been Mr. and Mrs. Hermando Folla for 50 years, the Rosebank couple were surprised by their children with an anniversary party at The Lake Club in Sunnyside. Among the family and friends that attended the celebration were the best man, Sebastian Moletti from North Arlington, and ushers Michael Cavallo from Old Bridge and Joseph McCallion from Washington Township, all in New Jersey.
Mrs. Folla was born in Manhattan. A graduate of Mabel Dean Bacon Vocational High School in that borough, she held a clerical position for five years with the Royal Globe Insurance Co. in Manhattan. She left the insurance company to raise a family of three sons and a daughter.
Mrs. Folla is an accomplished cook, enjoys collecting collectible dolls, gardening and crocheting afghans, baby outfits and doll clothes. She takes pride in doing all she can for her husband, children and grandchildren.
The couple has traveled to Niagara Falls and Buffalo, N.Y., Washington D.C. and Italy.
Mr. Folla was born in the Bronx and relocated to Rosebank when he was an infant. He attended McKee High School, leaving there to join the U.S. Marine Corps. He fought in the Korean War from 1952 to 1955, earning the rank of sergeant and awarded the Purple Heart. The day he was discharged was the day Mrs. Folla's family moved to Rosebank.
After Mr. Folla returned from the Marines, he worked as a sheet metal mechanic for New Jersey Locals No. 13 and No. 25. He retired in 1990 after 35 years of service.
He enjoys playing online poker, gardening and watching hockey. He belongs to the Korean War Veterans Association, the Marine Corps League and the local Kivlehan Chapter of Korean War Veterans Associations.

In June 2002, he received his McKee High School diploma at a special veterans' ceremony.
On Feb. 8, 1958, Mr. and Mrs. Folla were married in St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Rosebank. They are the parents of Christopher Folla of Eltingville, Cathleen Williams of Rosebank, Steven Folla of Brick, N.J., and Scott Folla of Rosebank.
