Mike Nadel: Rose tries to take low raod to Hall
Pete Rose still doesn't get it. Baseball's all-time hits leader appeared on comedian Dennis Miller's sports talk show this week. And after the host finished drooling all over the man he kept calling "Petey" and "my hero," Rose made his zillionth plea to be removed from the Hall of Fame's banned-for-life list.
The Mitchell Report came out; I never thought anybody would make me look like an altar boy," Rose said as Miller cackled approvingly. "If you're going to put these guys that supposedly did steroids in the Hall of Fame, I got to get a shot sometime.
"I've been suspended 18 years for betting on my own team to win. I loved my players and I had so much confidence in them. I was through as a player in '86 and I was managing the Reds in '87 and I needed more; that's why I did what I did.
"I was wrong, but these guys today, if the allegations are true, they're making a mockery of the game."
Wow. Charlie Hustler (that's no typo, folks) is a piece of work.
Each of Rose's points is so easily refutable, I feel a little guilty - as if I were debating a distracted 4-year-old.
* Just because some users of performance-enhancing drugs were caught, it doesn't mean Rose is any less of a slimeball for what he did.
* There is no evidence voters will put juicers in the Hall of Fame. Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire were decidedly rejected. Rafael Palmeiro has little chance. And if most voters believe Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds and others are guilty, they'll face rough sledding, too.
* For nearly a century, betting on baseball has been forbidden. Signs posted prominently in clubhouses remind managers, coaches and players of the rule every day. Nevertheless, Rose repeatedly committed the cardinal sin and repeatedly denied doing it (until finally admitting it in his book so he could make a buck).
* Saying he bet on his team because he needed the thrill after his playing days ended makes Rose look pathetic, not sympathetic. You want a thrill? Skydive. Play high-stakes poker. Date one of the Spears sisters. Just don't gamble on baseball.
* Why is it bad to bet on one's own team? Let's say a manager has used his closer three straight days. On the fourth, the manager has 50 grand on his team to win; so he again uses the now-exhausted closer, who suffers a season-ending injury. I'm not saying Rose did that. I'm just offering it as one of many ways a bet on one's own team could affect managerial strategy, a player's livelihood and a team's pennant hopes.
* Has anyone ever made a bigger mockery of baseball than Pete Rose? At least most juicers can claim there were no testing and punishment policies at the time of their infractions. Rose knew if he got caught, he'd be banned for life. He did it anyway and now whines about the penalty.
Sorry, Petey. No matter how many fans grovel at your feet and tell you how swell you are, you are no hero.
* HALL MONITOR: As a Baseball Writers Association of America voter, I've been asked if I'll vote for Clemens, Bonds and others named in the Mitchell Report. My answer: I don't know yet.
It sounds like a cop-out, but why make an ironclad, knee-jerk decision? A player can't appear on the Hall ballot until five years after he retires, and a lot of things can come to the surface between now and then.
OK, but what if I had to vote today?
Yes for Bonds because he had the numbers before his juicing allegedly began. Borderline yes for Clemens for similar reasons.
No for Sammy Sosa because we know El Corko's a flimflammer. No for Palmeiro, a liar and a cheat. No for Gary Sheffield, who doesn't pass the smell test. No for McGwire, who's "not here to talk about the past."
* COOPERSTOWN CALLING: The Mitchell Report made me ask some tough questions as I sat down to fill out my Hall ballot this year.
The statistics of Harold Baines, Dale Murphy, Dave Parker, Dave Concepcion and Alan Trammell fall short of those put up by many Steroid Era sluggers. But should I award the All-Stars of yesteryear "points" for not being suspects?
Given the number of pitchers named in the report, including Clemens and Andy Pettitte, should I view the non-enhanced achievements of Bert Blyleven, Tommy John and Lee Smith more favorably?
Primarily a DH, Baines rarely finished among statistical leaders. He was no Andre Dawson, a true five-tool talent who belongs in the Hall. Murphy and Parker rank well behind Jim Rice, a feared and productive hitter who just might get in this time.
Trammell and Concepcion are tempting because they played shortstop well and put up good numbers. But it isn't the Hall of Good.
Blyleven won more than 17 games only twice in 22 seasons. John had a higher winning percentage than Blyleven but fewer strikeouts and shutouts. Jack Morris, a great clutch pitcher who had the most victories in the '90s, is better than both. Despite his save total, I won't consider Smith until the far more dominant Goose Gossage is enshrined.
Giving ballplayers bonus points for not juicing would be like rewarding a kid for not egging the principal's house. Decency should be a given. Stats still matter. I also trust my instincts and years of observation; some guys "feel" like Hall of Famers while others simply don't.
My votes went to Gossage, Rice, Morris and Dawson.

Pete Rose is not a good person and deserved to be banned from baseball for his actions. Pete should get in the HOF for his accomplishments as a player. There are people in the HOF that weren't stellar people off the field. Cobb and several others were racist. Put on Pete's plaque that he was banned for baseball for life for betting on games while he was a manager, but no one can take away what he did as a player. I watch these so called superstars trot down to first base, pose when they hit home runs, even pose when they don't. Pete Rose should be in the HOF. Sports writers can judge people all they want, but they cannot argue against numbers.
Rose is on the permanent (not lifetime) suspension list. The Hall has decided that anyone on that list isn't eligible to be enshrined. Betting on your own games is the number 2 crime in baseball, behind throwing games. It's unforgivable, and Rose knew that. Based on his playing career, Rose is a Hall of Famer. Unfortunately he blew his shot at it when he broke the rules on gambling.
You can't prove, and no one else for that matter, that Sosa corked before that one particular day. They tested all the other bats in the inventory and all turned out legit. But, you say Bonds "had the numbers before the juicing allegedly began." He may have. But Sosa had the numbers way before that corking incident. Bonds put up over half his HRs after the juicing began and you'd still say yes? And Sosa had cork in 1 HR? Stop hating the Cubs for once and actually say the right thing. It's amazing you writers and the Veteran's Committee members will look past the roids for someone like Bonds but a talented player like Ron Santo in his day still gets snubbed. Amazing.
Thank you , Mr. Nadel, for making it absolutely clear that regardless of a person't individual performance, it does not warrant him being enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and that despite using performance enhancing drugs (which not only IMPROVE a person's individual and team stats, but also diminish potential of other players and teams), you still don't rule out their inclusion. Mr. Nadel, you are a master of a double standard. The Baseball Hall of Fame inclusion has not always been based on a vote by you so-called sportswriters. If there is a God, one day soon, that privilege will be revoked and given to those who mean the most, the fans.
Rose committed the worst possible sin in sports - undermining credibility and eroding public confidence. He should never, ever be allowing anywhere near Cooperstown. The performance-enhancing drug witchhunt needs to end. Strong testing and stiff punishment will take care of a problem that everyone (fans, owners, coaches, players) turned a blind eye to for years.
The performance-enchancing drug witchhunt as you call it is the same thing. None of them should be in the hall if you are saying the Pete Rose shouldn't be. I am completely sold that Pete should be in the hall and the one's who cheated and made themselves better by doing so shouldn't be. Pete didn't do anything to himself to make him get more hits, run faster, steal bases, score runs, etc...the others did with the HGH. He should be in, the other's shouldn't.

There are ways to create an unfair advantage for themselves in the network games and make big money. But there is no such requirement. If you want to succeed, the big poker stage, I urge you not to embark on a cheating. I have seen it time and time again: get good players cheating cheating, but that s all they ever did it. Cheating reasons, you focus on the mechanics of cheating and do not improve your game. In fact, your final conclusion is that you always need to improve your skills, because you can simply deceived by the way you treasure. Cheating is morally wrong, and it is always be condemned to highly skilled players.
