Seminoles to hire thousands of dealers as Vegas-style gaming debuts

The tribe is holding a job fair next week at the Atlantic City Convention Center and will do the same near Connecticut's booming Indian casinos, using the lure of beachside living to draw employees.

"We may even hit Las Vegas to see if people want to leave the dry, hot heat to come live in paradise," Seminole Tribal Councilor Max Osceola said.

Tribe officials never mentioned how much the dealers will be paid, although dealers typically rely on tips for most of their income.

The announcement came as the Seminoles unveiled 700 Las Vegas-style slot machines at their Coconut Creek casino. With scantily clad showgirls and aging crooners Frankie Avalon

Fabian and Bobby Rydell on hand, the tribe continued its march toward a more Las Vegas-style operation.

Blackjack tables are expected to hit the Hollywood Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in June and the other casinos soon after, as the tribe continues distancing itself from competing racetracks that are limited in what games they can offer and how much profit they can make.

November, the tribe expects profits to soar and is looking to build a hotel in Coconut Creek and add a second hotel to its marquee Hollywood property.

The Isle Casino at Pompano Park, say the state's 50-percent tax rate and other fees make it impossible for them to compete with the tribe.

They are not allowed to offer blackjack, baccarat or the ultra-high-stakes poker tournaments that Crist's compact grants to the tribe.

The tribe pays the state a portion of its profits based on a sliding scale that starts at 10 percent for the first $1.2 billion it makes yearly and peaks at about 16 percent total if the tribe nets $4 billion.

State legislators have challenged the deal in court, saying Crist does not have the authority to act without their approval.

"It's a very unlevel playing field and blackjack is just going to make it worse," said Doug Shipley, vice president for communications at the Isle Casino, which is less than five miles from the Coconut Creek casino. The Isle Casino spent more than $200 million upgrading its facility after winning a gaming license two years ago.

Shipley and other industry leaders said the state's high tax, along with an annual license fee of $3 million, make it impossible to advertise and attract new customers or upgrade facilities.
